Banished: Chapter 50
May. 23rd, 2007 08:34 pmAs the winter wore on, work on the Wolfsbane potion intensified. The Institute obtained a magical patent on the successful variant from January. It was dubbed Snape Basic Wolfsbane One. Nat gave it the nickname Snuperwolf. The team focused their efforts on developing a stable, storable version. A major breakthrough came in March when Mark figured out how to freeze-dry the finished potion. The resulting crystals were stored for a month, then mixed with water and re-heated. The reconstituted potion was used, cautiously, on a small group of werewolves. In case of potion failure, they were isolated for the transformation, but the freeze-dried version worked as well as the fresh.
Dr. Lunardi began working with a business consultant to plan how to market the improved Wolfsbane. He brought the proposed business plan to Headmistress Twofeathers for approval.
“Since we can produce it in bulk and store it in crystalline form, we can seriously undercut the price that the Ministry is charging. We can corner the market. Oh dear, Dr. Belby will be so upset.”
The Headmistress asked, “Is there any risk to Severus if we move forward with this?”
“We considered that, which is why we took out the patent under the Institute’s name and not Severus’. The packets of potion crystals will be labeled SBW-1. Of course, on the patent he is listed as the inventor and he will be the recipient of a substantial fraction of the profits, but our legal department feels that the Ministry will be unable to raise a case of patent infringement against him or against the Institute. Snuperwolf is sufficiently different from the original Wolfsbane.”
When informed of the plan, Severus asked that the price be kept as low as possible, so that any victim of lycanthropy could afford the treatment. He refused any personal profit from the venture, but allowed Anton to divert a portion to the redemption fund. The fund, buoyed by the profits from Severus’ beauty and medicinal potions, had grown to quite a substantial sum. Minerva had found a trustworthy former student to administer the fund, investing the principal and disbursing grants to worthy recipients.
When Remus heard about Severus’ fund, he started to wonder about the grant he had received the previous summer. When quizzed about it, Severus reluctantly admitted that he had been behind it, with Minerva’s help.
“You gave me your Hogwarts salary?”
“It seemed only fair, Remus, since I cost you your job there.”
“And the wealthy pureblood family?”
“I needed a cover story that you would believe, since I knew you would not take money from me directly.”
“I can’t say you were wrong about that. And now that I know, I want to pay you back.”
“No, I won’t take the money from you Remus. If you want to return what I gave you, put it into the fund, so that others can be helped by it.”
Remus wasn’t sure how he felt about being tricked into accepting the grant. If he was honest with himself however, he had to acknowledge that he had been in desperate need at the time and he was very grateful to his mystery benefactor. He decided he would start paying onto the fund for the benefit of others in the same situation.
“I will just have to find other ways to pay you back personally, Severus.” He leered at him playfully while pretending to twirl his moustache.
On the outside, Severus just raised an eyebrow at his mate, but internally he rejoiced that the secret was out and that Remus had taken it so well.
