Dammit! A shiny new fandom has dragged me away from Star Trek. Sherlock (the new BBC version that recently appeared on US PBS stations) has sucked me in. This is only a problem because I am writing a story for the Kirk/Spock Advent Calendar and it should be done by now, not half done.

Hey there! I am still around, but my posting has been entirely comments on other journals and nothing on my own.
I have been laid off for 3 1/2 months now. I am still on severance, so no money worries...yet. Not many jobs for veterinary pathologists in the area though. I need to move to the East Coast. Unfortunately most of the jobs are in the eastern NJ area, not the nicest place to live.
I got information today on the pension I can expect to get from my old job once I get to 62. It was pretty decent; I was surprised. Now I just have to make it to 62...that's a ways to go yet.

I haven't had much to say in the past 3 months. I have 18 work days left. I am taking a course offered by the out-placement company working with us poor unfortunate souls. It starts tomorrow and it is essentially, 'what do you want to do with the rest of your life?'
I am hoping for answers.
I was at the library yesterday, looking for a book suggested by the coach of the above course. It was not in the stacks, but I did grab a couple mysteries to while away the evening.
Have you noticed that many published books now-a-days are like mediocre fanfiction? The one I started last night, part of the 'Gourmet Detective' series, has poor writing, poor editing and factual errors. I would stick to fanfiction, but it is dangerous to take my computer into the bathtub with me.
I have not written much myself, being enthralled by the tsunami of good fanfic engendered by the release of the new Star Trek movie last June. Perhaps when I am laid off I will work on a Star Trek story of my own. Or maybe I should publish a book. I know I can do as well as some of the drek I find on the library shelves. /end rant/

Last minute (and I do mean LAST minute) reprieve. I remain employed until the end of March. This makes for a very merry Christmas.

Many thanks to [personal profile] posyvanilla  for enabling me to get this account.  I have written almost exclusively on LiveJournal in the snape100 drabble community.  Lately I have been seduced away from Harry Potter by the massive outpouring of fanfic related to the new Star Trek movie.  I have  a few plot bunnies in this new fandom that I hope to write soon.  Until then I will be enjoying the work of other authors.

Got my notice today.  Last day will be December 31.  Guess I have to think about the future now........well, maybe I will in December.

The world's slowest layoff continues.  I still do not know my ending date (although I should find out this week) but the transition is starting to hit close to home.  They are taking my microscope away to send it to one of the other sites.

Farewell faithful scope, my good friend for 12 years.  May your next owner use you well.

I'm back

Back from a week in New Hampshire with Mr. Macabee, hanging with the family and seeing the fall foliage.  It was very nice.

It's been a year since the Mothership announced they were closing our site.  The first significant layoffs are next Friday, the 31st.  I think I am employed until the end of December, although there are no guarantees.
Such is life.  In 3 weeks I will have completed 18 years with this company and its predecessor.  Not too shabby in this world.  And the company has been very generous with severance.

It was 30 years ago today that I put a U-Haul cartop carrier on my 1972 Toyota Corona; loaded it, the trunk and the backseat with my stuff; put my dog in the shotgun seat and departed New Hampshire for California.

Twenty five years old, driving solo cross-country.  I was so brave.

It took me 4 1/2 days; I took a half-day break in Salt Lake City.  Since I did not have air conditioning I was very lucky it never got too hot during the trip.  Except the last day.  As I came down from the Sierras into the Sacramento Valley it went from the 60s to 110.

I was only going to spend 4 years here, get my pathology training and then go back to work for UNH.

It did not work out that way.  But even after 30 years, more than half my life, California is not home; New Hampshire is home.

Someday I am going home.

I went to the Los Altos Art and Wine Festival and found him.  I fell in love with his blue eyes.
Isn't he darling?

Wishing my fellow Americans a joyous Independence Day.  Revel in your freedom, but remember how hard won it was and resolve to protect it in the future.
And a belated Happy Canada Day to our neighbors up North.

Went for a walk in the park down the street from my house and saw these guys.  They just left the nest today.

I went to Bed Bath and Beyond yesterday to buy an acrylic tray for the bathroom (housecleaning tip: these trays make cleaning the vanity so much easier.  I have one for my stuff, one for Mr. Macabee's and one for common stuff.  When it is time to clean I pick up the trays and put them on the floor and voila... a clear, empty vanity to wipe down.)

But I digress...BBand B had purple sheets; not lavender, not burgundy, honest to goodness royal purple, grape popsicle sheets.  I am a total sheet whore and I had to have them.

I call it supporting the economy.

I rented Mamma Mia from Netflix this week.  I only made it through the first 30 minutes.  It is the first movie since Batman and Robin that I just gave up on.  It was just so silly; stupid really.  I cringed to see Meryl Streep acting like a total idiot.

My sister bought the DVD for my father, who is a total Meryl Streep fan.  He couldn't watch it.  I thought maybe it was because it was a chick flick so I decided to try it myself.  Nope, Pa was right, it is just a bad, embarrassingly bad, movie.

It reminded me of the film of the musical, The Producers.  People who should have known better translated the play's broad comedy to the movie screen unmodified, pushing things so far over the top it was like a fountain of stupidity.  You do need to tone things down a bit when you are making a movie.

This is my own opinion of course.  Yours may vary.

*Sigh*
My lovely loong holiday break is over and I have to go back to work tomorrow.
I know I am lucky and I am grateful to have a job, but boy, the time off was so nice.

2009 should be a very interesting year.  Let us hope it is an improvement on 2008.
