Precisely at 7:50 Severus presented himself at the Headmaster’s office. He hoped for a last-minute reprieve, or at least some sign of forgiveness. He was disappointed to see Deputy Headmistress McGonagall waiting for him.
“Where is the Headmaster, Minerva?”
“He is seeing Remus off on the Hogwarts Express. He asked me to supervise your departure.”
“I am sorry that I am making you miss saying good bye to Lupin.”
“We said our farewells yesterday. Severus, I am angry with you, but I understand. I know that your exposure of Remus was not done with a pure heart, but I agree that it was unacceptable for Remus to remain here. Not only did he forget to take the Wolfsbane; he concealed vital information about an escaped felon who apparently was after a student. My complaint with you is the method you used to remove Remus. Now that his secret is out, he will not have an easy time finding another job.”
“I have been thinking about my actions since Albus told me he was sending me away, Minerva. I admit that I was being spiteful, but to have my hopes crushed the way they were and to see Albus laugh about it, I wanted to strike back. I am sorry now, but of course it is too late.”
Minerva sighed. “I blame Albus for a large part of this disaster and he will be hearing about it in great detail, but now we must get you ready for your departure.”
She handed him a leather case. “Here are your identity papers, tickets and itinerary. Albus also included the equivalent of 100 galleons each in American magical and Muggle currency. Your room and board will be provided by the Institute. Albus sent a letter of introduction to the Headmistress yesterday.”
Severus cringed to think what might be in that letter.
Minerva took him by the shoulders and gave him a little shake. “Severus, despite what Albus said to you yesterday, you should be glad for this opportunity. My friends at the Institute would be appalled to learn that you were being sent there as punishment; it is a world-famous place of learning and it is an honor to be selected to teach there. My dear, your life has been so restricted; take this chance to learn about life beyond Hogwarts."
She pulled him for a brief hug, and then stepped back. “Well, all right, are you ready?”
He checked his robe pocket for his shrunken trunk, hung the case over his shoulder and took a handful of Floo powder.
“Thank you Minerva”, he said, his throat strangely tight. Tossing the powder into the hearth, he called out “International PortkeyTerminal”, stepped into the flames and was gone.
Minerva bowed her head and whispered a prayer to Mother Earth to grant him safe travels and a beneficial sojourn at the Institute. Then, shaking out her skirts, she stepped briskly out to find the Headmaster and give him a piece of her mind.

Date: 2007-04-09 12:32 pm (UTC)Love the hug between Minerva and Severus and her scolding of him. Yes, AD should be getting an earful.
Love the reference to Mother Earth. Nice to know that I'm not the only one who thinks there's more to magic than waving wands.

Date: 2007-04-09 07:49 pm (UTC)I found that Minerva behaved for me as she did for you in Quid 2. This was supposed to be a cameo and she was to be stern and unforgiving. She did not agree. She also required the Mother Earth reference.
Now I have to figure out how a trans-oceanic floo connection would work, or I have to go back and switch to portkeys.
