Finding Josefa packing in her office, the Headmistress performed the introductions, and then excused herself to return to her own work after requesting that Josefa take Severus to lunch.

As Josefa cleared off a chair for him, Severus examined his replacement. She appeared to be around his age, of medium height and slim. Her hair was dark blonde, worn in intricate French braids. Her eyes were a vivid blue, bright with intelligence and laughter as she caught him evaluating her. He flushed and looked down.

“Do I pass inspection then, Professor?”

“I beg your pardon, Miss Sanderson.”

“Please call me Josefa and may I call you Severus?” He nodded and she waved him to his seat. She offered him a mug of tea from the teapot steaming on her desk.

“I want you to know how grateful I am for this opportunity Severus. My dissertation is in sad need of some research time in Europe, but I had not found a way to make that happen. Now, not only can I do that research, I can get some experience at one of the great wizarding schools.”

“I am afraid I am not the one responsible, Josefa, I am here because my Headmaster sent me and it was your Headmistress who chose you to go back in my place.”

“However it happened, it is a great chance for me and I think that you will enjoy your time at the Institute. Now, it would be a great help if you could give me some pointers on how to get along at Hogwarts.”

As she plied him with tea and tiny muffins, he told her of the people and customs of Hogwarts. Josefa was a Sensitive, and could feel the unconscious thoughts behind his words. His great affection for Minerva McGonagall shone through, as did his strong and complicated feelings about Albus Dumbledore. He spoke of the ancient magic that imbued the walls of Hogwarts and of the other staff that served there. She laughed at his description of Rubeus Hagrid and his menagerie of doubtful pets and decided that Poppy Pomfrey was someone she would like. He spoke of his students and she could sense his fears for his godson, Draco Malfoy and his frustrations with Harry Potter. His feelings about the Potter boy were so complex and muddled that she knew there was more to that story. He told her about Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters, and his self-disgust as he did so was over-whelming. By the time he had told her all he could think of to prepare her, fours hours had passed and they both were tired and hungry.

“Thank you Severus, I feel much better prepared now. Let’s go to lunch, shall we?”

On their way out, she showed him the restrooms, which they both were much in need of, and the break room. Inside the break room she pointed out his mailbox and his personal mug in the cup cubby. It was a dark forest green ceramic tea mug with his initials, in silver, appearing as stylized snakes. From his reaction she could tell that this kind of attention to his needs or wants was quite foreign to him and she felt a burst of anger on his behalf. As they walked over to the dining hall for a late lunch she pointed out some of the other buildings; Gilgamesh Hall for history, Hawking Hall for arithmancy, and off in the distance, away from the lights of campus, the astronomy building, Kachina Hall. In the dining hall, she introduced him to more faculty, staff and students. News of her imminent departure had obviously spread and many friends stopped by with good wishes.

They enjoyed a light meal of soup and salad, and then she advised him to go change into working clothes before going to Granny’s.

“Do you think you can apparate there on your own?” she asked him.

“Yes, I was there yesterday with Nat.”

“Remember to apparate to her front yard and announce yourself first. It is considered very impolite here to appear without warning in someone’s home or office. Thank you again Severus, and I hope you will be happy here.”

“Safe journey Josefa and good luck at Hogwarts.” He offered her his hand, but instead she pulled him into a brief hug. As she hurried off towards the administration building, he watched her go, thinking that she might do very well in battle with Albus.

Ah, I like her. (She can be mean, cruel, heartless and rigid with Albus.)

She can be whatever is necessary. I am at 30 pages and only on the third day. I shall have to speed things up or we will never get to my fantastic ending.

Now you know!
